Osborne House

The Osborne House was the favorite seaside home of Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. You can visit this home of royalty as well as over 580 other attractions in England with the Great British Heritage Pass.

The Osborne House estate was purchased in 1845, and the original house was torn down in order to erect a larger one more suitable for housing a royal family. This house was built mainly for the purpose of spending time with the family and children away from public life and distractions, but was still considered a royal residence and sometimes hosted affairs of the State.

When the new building was created, Prince Albert played a key role in its design. Prince Albert favored the style of Italian Renaissance, and is so apparent in the design and layout of the new Osborne House. The high ceilings and walls were ornately decorated and the Grand Corridor served as a sculpture gallery for the family.

After you explore all the rooms of Osborne House and enjoy the extravagant decorations, you can visit the museum that Osborne House offers. The museum is a pleasure to visit because it has such a wide variety of collections to enjoy.

You can also enjoy the Victoria Fort and Albert Barracks, as well as stunning gardens that surround the manor. For an added treat, you can end your royal visit by taking a horse-drawn carriage to visit Swiss Cottage, where the royal children learned to cook.

Queen Victoria and Prince Albert’s favorite home Osborne House is a fantastic place to visit while touring through England. You are sure to enjoy this little glimpse into royal life.
