Clifford’s Tower« GO BACK
Clifford’s Tower in York is a cornerstone of Northern England heritage and a longstanding icon of English history, dating right back to the middle ages. Tourists in Britain will find themselves in awe of the rich history behind Clifford’s Tower, just as they are so many other properties on the Great British Heritage Pass. Clifford’s Tower was originally built by William the Conqueror and stands as a symbol of the might of the medieval kings. There are magnificent views over York and the surrounding countryside. Around 1068 to 1069, William the Conqueror built two motte’s and bailey castles in York, to strengthen his military hold on the north. Clifford's Tower, an unusual four-lobed keep built in the 13th century atop the mound of William's larger fortress, is now the principal surviving stonework remnant of York's medieval castle. The sweeping views of the city from the tower still show why it played such an important part in controlling northern England. Most of the tower that visitors can see today dates from the 13th century, with some 17th century additions, notably the Debtor's Prison, Female prison, and Assize Court. Spiral staircases lead to the walls, and those who make the climb are rewarded by superb views of the city.
