The Great British Heritage Pass allows you free access to over 580 UK heritage sites, including many magnificent castles in Scotland, England and Wales. Explore the awe-inspiring castles of Britain and learn about its vibrant history.

Scottish Castles

Your exploration of the UK’s castles begins in Scotland, on the banks of Loch Ness, where it’s reputed that the Loch Ness Monster lurks beneath the depths of the dark waters.  Urquhart Castle was a medieval fortress for 500 years, from the 13th to the 17th century, figuring prominently in Scotland’s struggle for independence in the 14th century.  It was once one of Scotland’s largest castles and today is an impressive stronghold, despite its ruinous state.

Continue towards the town of Stirling and Stirling Castle, a royal castle which dominates the countryside, one of Scotland’s grandest castles.  It towers over Stirling Bridge, which is where William Wallace had his victory over the English in 1297.  Visitors can explore the Great Hall, Gate House, and medieval Great Kitchens, and also learn more about Scotland’s
fascinating history.

A visit to Scotland would not be complete without a visit to Edinburgh Castle, which dominates Edinburgh’s skyline and sits upon an extinct volcano.  It includes exhibitions on the Scottish Crown Jewels and the Stone of Destiny, as well as St. Margaret’s Chapel, which is Edinburgh’s oldest building, and the Scottish War Memorial.

English Castles

Explore more of Britain’s magnificent castles in the Southeast, at Dover Castle and the Secret Wartime Tunnels.  Dover Castle was originally built in 1066 by William of Normandy.  No fortress in England has a longer history than Dover Castle.  You can also take one of the inclusive tours of the Secret Wartime Tunnels.

Continue East towards Leeds Castle, often described as ‘the loveliest castle in the world.’  It is set on two islands and has Norman foundations; a medieval gatehouse; the Gloriette, built by Edward I and updated in Henry VIII’s times; a Tudor tower; and a 19th century country house - all of which were substantially refurbished in the 20th century.

At Arundel Castle you’ll find a stunning ancient castle and stately home which includes priceless treasures, a medieval keep, grounds and organic gardens.

On your way towards, Wales, stop in the Heart of England, where you’ll find Warwick Castle and Rockingham Castle.  Warwick Castle, considered to be Britain’s Greatest Medieval Experience, is over 1000 years old and overlooks the River Avon.  Rockingham Castle was built upon the instruction of William the Conqueror as a medieval fortress.  Situated in the Welland Valley and Rockingham Forest, it has stunning views across five counties.

Welsh Castles

Magical Wales welcomes you to Cardiff Castle, situated in the middle of Wales’ capital.  Visitors can take tours of the stunning castle interiors, which include Roman remains, a Norman keep, and a military museum, all within lovely grounds.

Complete your tour of the UK’s castles at Caernarfon Castle, a World Heritage Site.  King Edward intended this castle to be a royal residence and seat of government for North Wales.  In 1969, the castle gained worldwide fame as the setting for the investiture of HRH Prince Charles as Prince of Wales.
