Castle Coole

« GO BACK

Castle Coole in Enniskillen is one of the finest neo-classical houses in Northern Ireland. Explore the history and heritage of Castle Coole in Northern Ireland for yourself with the Great British Heritage Pass.

Originally the family home of the Earls of Belmore, the magnificent Castle Coole took ten years to build, with work finally coming to an end in 1798. The interior of the house was created by some of the leading craftsmen of the late 18th century with chimney pieces, plasterwork, columns and pilasters all produced by notable people in history.

When you visit Castle Coole you will be delighted by the wonderful state rooms with their opulent Regency furnishings. Of particular note are the State Bedroom which is said to have been created especially for George IV when he stayed at the house in 1821, and the Great Hall where musical events are often held.

Castle Coole is set on 700 acres of parkland and woods which slope nicely down to Lough Coole, a local lake / sea inlet. Visitors can wile hours away taking walks in the grounds, sitting in the Grand Yard, exploring the unusual servants tunnel and the recently restored Ice House. There are also stables, a laundry house and a display room housing the Belmore private coach.

Significant restoration of Castle Coole was completed in 1988, with her Majesty the Queen Mother re-opening the house to the public.

Castle Coole is within easy reach of the National Trust's other properties in County Fermanagh, including Florence Court which is also covered by the Great British Heritage Pass.
