Cardiff Castle« GO BACK
Cardiff Castle, situated in the very heart of Cardiff, is a beautiful castle and one of the most popular sightseeing attractions in Wales - a must on your Great British Heritage Pass sightseeing trip around Britain. The fairytale-style towers of Cardiff Castle contrast brilliantly with the neighbouring city centre shops and expansive Bute Park. Inside one can discover nearly 2,000 years of history on a grand and impressive scale. Founded by the Normans in 1091, Cardiff Castle’s most famous occupant was Robert, Duke of Normandy, who was imprisoned there by his younger brother, King Henry I of England, from 1106 until 1134. The castle was passed through many noble families, until in 1766 it passed by marriage to the Bute family. Within their time, members of the Bute family turned Cardiff into the world's greatest coal exporting port, and eventually became the reputed richest family in the world. The Earl of Bute also commissioned architect William Burges to create a new, medieval castle, recreating Cardiff Castle as a true fairytale residence. Cardiff Castle as seen today features opulent interiors, murals, stained glass, marble, gilding and elaborate wood carvings. Each breathtaking room has its own special theme, including Mediterranean gardens and Italian and Arabian decoration. As well as visiting the spectacular interiors, visitors can enjoy the grounds at Cardiff Castle, where geese and peacocks wander at their leisure. The Castle Tea Rooms and gift shop also provide a pleasant respite for visitors. Each year, Cardiff Castle plays host to Cardiff University's Summer Ball. It is also the site of Wales' largest Mardi Gras every August, and has been host to a number of rock concerts and performances in recent years. Planning your visit to Cardiff CastleCardiff Castle is open every day, all year round, except Christmas Day, Boxing Day and New Year's Day.
