Bodiam Castle« GO BACK
Bodiam Castle, owned by the National Trust, is undoubtedly one of the most majestic Bodiam Castle is exactly how most people expect a medieval castle to look with its square walls and round tower at each end. Located on the East Sussex/Kent border, this beautiful castle appears to be floating upon the moat which surrounds it. Bodiam Castle was constructed in 1385 at the request of Sir Edward Dallyngrigge to protect against the threat of French invasion during the Hundred Years War. It never actually came under siege though and soon after became home to a series of wealthy and powerful Sussex families. After the castle fell into ruin and decay in the 17th century, the majestic building was purchased and restored to its original by Lord Turnzon and then willed to the National Trust in 1926. Thanks to the restorations, you can now climb most of the towers and even walk along It has been more recently suggested that because of its rare beauty and splendor, Bodiam Castle may never have been built for defensive purposes but rather just for show, and as a stately home. The picturesque Bodiam Castle is very popular and has been featured in several movies and films, such as Monty Python and the Holy Grail. This is an absolutely exquisite castle to see along your journey through Great Britain. With the Great British Heritage Pass, you can explore the stunningly magic of Bodiam Castle as well as hundreds of other amazing attractions throughout Britain.
