The Beatrix Potter Gallery in Hawkshead, Cumbria, is a quintessentially English attraction which will delight tourists of all ages on their visit to Britain. Known worldwide for Children’s books such as ‘The Tale of Peter Rabbit’, Beatrix Potter’s legacy lives on at this Gallery and you can visit it free with the Great British Heritage Pass. The displayed sketches and watercolours change annually at the Beatrix Potter Gallery, with the 2007 focus being The Tale of Mr Jeremy Fisher and The Story of Miss Moppet, celebrating their 100th birthdays. Also on display are artefacts and information relating to her life and work beyond the 'Tales'. The 17th-century building which houses the Beatrix Potter works was once the office of her husband, William Heelis. The interior remains substantially unaltered since his day, giving an interesting insight into an Edwardian law office. A great tourist attraction for family travel, the Beatrix Potter Gallery has occasional story reading sessions, very popular children's quizzes and goodie bags to take away. The Cumbria location gives visitors the opportunity to explore the ancient township of Hawkshead, once dominated by monks and to this day a maze-like village non accessible by cars. Beatrix Potter was a determined preserver of her beloved Lake District and a great believer in the aims of the fledgling National Trust, who run the Beatrix Potter Gallery. Beatrix donated her numerous farms and land to the Trust in 1943. Planning your visit to the Beatrix Potter GalleryThe Beatrix Potter Gallery is located in the Main Street of Hawkshead village, next to the Red Lion pub. As there is no vehicle access in the village, cars must be left in the main village carpark, located 200 yards from the Gallery. The Gallery is open from 10.30 until 16.30 on most days between March and October each year. Please refer to the National Trust website for full details of opening hours.
